Studying in the Library: A Breakdown

Southern Utah University is fortunate to have an expansive library with tons of space for students to work and study where they please. Not sure which study area is for you? Here’s a basic breakdown of each floor in the Gerald R. Sherratt Library.
Garden Level
Nestled downstairs with Special Collections, the Garden Level’s dim lighting and quiet atmosphere makes it the perfect place to crank out those big assignments. Students can also access materials in Special Collections with the supervision and assistance of Special Collections Staff.
Main Level
The main level is the most popular floor in the library thanks to its 132 student computers and easy access to all the library’s resources. Food, beverages, and conversation are all also permitted on this floor. The first floor is the perfect space for completing assignments online, and for casually studying with friends.
Main Level resources include:
- Soda Nerd
- Questions Desk
- Reference desk
- Check out desk
- Printers (color and black & white)
- Scanners
- Copy Shop
- Therapy Dogs
Second Level
The second level is a quiet study space with lots of desks and chairs. The most prominent feature of the library’s second floor is the large atrium window. Studies have shown that exposure to sunlight can help improve information retention and mood. The sunny window combined with the quiet atmosphere makes the second floor the perfect place to study for a test. The second floor also has easy to navigate bookshelves (labeled and organized with the Library of Congress Cataloging and Classification System).
Third Level
The third level of the library is a great space for studying in groups. The third floor has large tables, rolling whiteboards, and no limit on the noise level. The third level also houses several of the administrative offices where you can find the library administration, library faculty offices, and technical services.
Study Rooms
A unique component to the SUU Library is the ability for students to reserve the study rooms located throughout the building- a great idea for group projects! You can reserve one of six group study rooms the same day, or in advance. Each study room is equipped with a whiteboard and a computer with either a monitor or projector. Book further in advance during busy semester times such as midterms and finals.
SUU's Gerald R. Sherratt Library is a well-equipped library with skilled staff readily available to help you. Library hours may alter by semester, holiday, or finals. A full list of the library’s hours can be found on their website.
