how to find a job as a college studentFinding a job as a college student can be difficult with scheduling issues, transportation issues, and other problems. We’ll make it easier for you in this blog post with 10 ways to find a job as a college student at Southern Utah University.

10 Steps to Find a Job in College

1. Polish Your Resume & Cover Letter

Having a strong resume and cover letter is vital to the job search process. Check out the resume and cover letter advice on the Career and Professional Development Center’s website or read through this PDF packet, also from the Career Center, to get started.

2. Search for local student jobs

Cedar City is a college town, so local businesses often have jobs especially suited for college students. One way to learn about these positions is to network with friends, roommates, neighbors, upperclassmen, and the like to see where they have worked. Another way to find a local job is to use Google Maps to locate and contact the businesses you’re interested in.

3. Search SUU’s on-campus job database

Did you know SUU has a job database specifically for student jobs available on-campus? On-campus jobs are great because they work with your schedule, they have a low commute (especially if you live on-campus), and the days off usually align with school breaks and holidays. To search this database, go to my.suu.edu → Apps → T-Bird Campus Jobs or to https://my.suu.edu/jobs.

4. Search SUU’s off-campus job database

In addition to SUU’s on-campus job database, SUU also has an off-campus job database. To access the off-campus job database, go to my.suu.edu → Resources → Handshake. Once you’ve reached the landing page, click “Jobs” then search by “Cedar City” in the location field, or “Local Job” in the job title.

5. Utilize the Utah Department of Workforce Services

The Utah Department of Workforce Services helps locals to prepare for and seek out employment. In addition to job and career opportunities, they also have veteran resources, job fairs, and workshops. Their local office in Cedar City is located at 176 East 200 North.

6. Attend a Career Fair

SUU’s Career Center hosts several Career Fairs each semester. During the COVID-19 pandemic, fairs are being hosted on an online platform. Students at every level are invited to attend and network. Learn more about upcoming Career Fairs.

7. Schedule an Appointment in the Career Center

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or lost in relation to your career, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Career Center for a meeting. Fill out the contact form on their website to get in touch with someone to set up an appointment.

8. Send Your Application/Cover Letter

Sending in your application or cover letter is the next step to the job hunt process. Spend some time on this task to show your potential employers the care you’ll put into your new position. See step #7 for cover letter advice.

9. Prepare for Your Interview

Preparing yourself for the interview beforehand will boost your confidence and the delivery of your answers. Visit the Career Center website for interview tips to get started. Research the company/position, and be ready to ask and answer questions.

10. Utilize Career Center Resources
