SUU Community Education Celebrates Learn Something New Year

To start the new year, Southern Utah University’s Community Education program is offering a fresh lineup of online and in-person classes. Seven online classes will debut this spring to help southern Utah residents explore new hobbies, engage in creativity and interact with others. In-person and outdoor class options are scheduled to run alongside the online offerings.
Online classes in the spring lineup include Southeast Asian Cooking in the Home, Localscapes: Landscape Designed for Utah, Living Succulent Wreath Making, Interior Decorating With What You Have, UnTangled Designs, The Art of Making a Home and Visual Journaling.
“By offering online classes we can be sure everyone has the opportunity to keep learning,” said Melynda Thorpe, executive director at SUU Community Education. “Interactive courses, whether online or in person, are significant contributors to staying healthy, active and engaged with the community.”
New to the lineup this spring is a Southeast Asian cooking class where participants create a new dish each week from the comfort home. Beginning Jan. 28, online instruction will be provided by Chef Drew Nehrenz, culinary instructor at Southwest Technical College. Recipes selected for instruction include Yam Makheauea Yao, a grilled eggplant salad and Muu Waan sweet pork sandwiches. Two cooking kits, recipes and shopping lists are included with this class.
Also being offered online this spring are interior design, landscaping and art classes. The Art of Making a Home is a two-day class designed to help you prepare the home for springtime. Participants learn the art of creating an inviting front porch and backyard patio setting. A landscaping to improve curb appeal with less maintenance class starts March 23. And for developing artistic ability in a year meant for recording personal history, a visual journaling class will combine the creative processes of writing a life story with colored pencil, collage and watercolor techniques. This online course begins Feb. 18.
For the in-person learner, a six-week oil painting class beginning April 22 will focus on landscapes in both reference and plein air settings. This course is taught by local artist Tiffany Marchant and will be held Thursday afternoons at Main Street Books in Cedar City for a fun learning atmosphere.
If you’re in need of fresh air and recreation, join our outdoor pickleball class and find out why this sport has become popular for all ages. Learn techniques for serving the ball, basic grip, forehand and backhand hitting and rules of the game.
