Experience the Joy of Music with SUU’s Symphony Orchestra

Music brings human emotion to life. Being able to experience a live concert can bring joy in the most difficult times. The SUU Department of Music will live stream an engaging performance by the SUU Symphony Orchestra. Jocelyn Thomson, Concertmaster of the SUU Symphony Orchestra, states, “Working on this concert has been a lot of fun. We've been lucky to still have a full orchestra during this pandemic. With COVID, we've been having a lot more sectionals and small group work in order to maintain social distancing measures and be safe during this pandemic. With social distancing, it can be a bit difficult to hear your section and the other sections, so it makes watching and following the conductor extra important. Being part of the SUU Symphony Orchestra has been such a blessing and it has provided me with so many wonderful opportunities to grow as a musician and experience a variety of repertoire.”
The SUU Symphony Orchestra is a dedicated group of student musicians who rehearse and perform orchestral masterpieces from both the standard repertoire and newly composed literature.
Dr. Xun Sun, Director of SUU Symphony Orchestra, shares, “We choose something very special to share with everyone for the concert. We will perform the final movement based on the poem of ‘What Love Says’ from Mahler’s Symphony no. 3. The Symphony Orchestra is also doing a world premiere of a new piece titled, ‘Love Never Ends’ by Chinese composer, Hunag Xunfang with guest conductor, Dr. Adam Lambert. We will also perform the brilliant Symphony no. 4 by Tchaikovsky. It will be a fantastic concert!"
The safety of the students at SUU is of utmost importance to the faculty, staff, and the university as a whole. In order to comply with the safety protocols involved with the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Xun Sun split the students into two groups to make room for better spacing between musicians, allowing for social distancing as well as musicians wearing masks and covering the ends of their wind instruments where necessary.
